What is Germanium?

Germanium is a hard, brittle, greyish-white metalloid. It does not occur as a free element in nature, but rather, it’s found in small quantities locked within zinc ores and certain types of coal. As a highly efficient intrinsic semiconductor, it possesses unique optical and electrical properties that make it a globally recognised “Technology-Critical Element.”

 

What is Germanium used for?

Germanium operates at the cutting edge of light and data manipulation. Its primary applications include:

  • Fibre-Optic Systems: This is Germanium’s largest modern application. Germanium Dioxide (GeO2) is added to the pure silica glass core of fibre-optic cables to increase its refractive index. This prevents signal loss over long distances, forming the physical backbone of the internet and global telecommunications.

  • Infrared Optics: Germanium is entirely transparent to infrared light. Because of this, it is widely used to manufacture the lenses and windows for thermal imaging cameras, night vision systems and satellite-based infrared sensors used by the military and aerospace industries.

  • Solar Cells & LEDs: In the push for higher energy efficiency, Germanium is used as a substrate in highly efficient multi-junction solar cells (commonly used on spacecraft and satellites) and in the production of specialised Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs).

  • Advanced Chemistry & Nanowires: Germanium compounds are highly valued as polymerisation catalysts in the production of certain plastics (like PET). Recently, it has also found cutting-edge use in the production of semiconductor nanowires and complex organometallic chemistry.
