Yttrium is a silvery-metallic transition metal that’s chemically similar to the lanthanides. Because of this similarity, it is historically and practically classed as one of the rare earth metal elements. It is lightweight, stable in the air, and possesses unique chemical properties that make it indispensable in alloys and ceramics.

What is Yttrium used for?

The most common question we get is about everyday use, and Yttrium serves as a perfect example of how rare earths drive innovation. Its versatility allows it to function as a stabiliser, a strengthener and a colour enhancer in various high-tech applications, such as:

  • Electronics & Displays: Yttrium Oxide (Y2O3) and Yttrium Orthovanadate (YVO4) are doped with the lanthanide, Europium (Eu), to create the brilliant red phosphors found in colour televisions, computer monitors and energy-efficient LEDs.

  • Microwave Communications: In the world of connectivity, Yttrium Iron Garnets (Y3Fe5O12) act as powerful microwave filters, essential for the clarity and function of microwave communication equipment.
  • Lasers & Optics: Yttrium Aluminium Garnets, commonly known as YAGs, are used to simulate diamonds in jewellery [not the same as Cubic Zirconia (CZ)] but, more importantly, serve as the gain medium in high-power lasers used in medicine, manufacturing and defence.
